Horses, or caballos, as they are called by their Spanish name in Mexico, have served an important part in Spanish history.

While I’m staying at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa, I noticed the beautiful bronze statues in the lobby of the hotel. Next door the CasaMagna Cancun Resort had an oil painting of a Spanish soldier mounted on his trusty stead.

If you’ve always wanted to go on a horseback riding vacation in Cancun, Mexico, here are several equitrekking opportunites for you to try.

I’ll be going on a horseback riding vacation at Holkan Kingdom and will report back on my experience.

If you need to pick up a leather pair of Mexican cowboy boots, Mercado 28 in downtown Cancun had several tiendas or shops. Adios.

If you are ever planning a trip to Mexico again, I highly recommend Coyote Canyon Adventures in San Miguel de Allende. I spent a week with them riding their well-trained horses all day, having dinner around the campfire and even bathing in the river. They do everything from half day trips to week-long rides and are really fun, professional and safe. Their website is http://www.coyotecanyonadventures.com. Hope to read about a ride with you at Coyote Canyon soon!
