Roping a Steer at Anna Ranch
National Geographic Traveler columnist Christopher Elliott recently visited Anna Ranch with his family to learn about the cattle ranching history of the area and the ranches namesake Anna Leialoha Lindsey Perry-Fiske. Anna was well known on the Big Island as an accomplished equestrian and would often take horseback riding vacations to the other islands to participate in ranching and cultural activities.
Take a Horseback Riding Vacation Back in Time with Anna
Born in 1900 and living to be 95 years old, Anna was an inspiration to many people. She loved riding horses and was still riding and roping in her 80’s. Her passion for riding horses was evident in everything she did from being known as the “Queen of Pa’u” to the “First Lady of Ranching in Hawaii.”
Visit Anna Ranch Heritage Center on a Horseback Riding Vacation to Waimea
For several years Anna taught young riders equestrian skills at her stables she founded and ran in Hilo. She was an award winning jockey, who raced against men and women, very often winning first place. Her beautiful ranch home in Waimea was in the same ranching family for five generations and is now open to the public. When visitors tour the home on a horseback riding vacation, they are immersed in the history of ranching in Hawaii. They learn how Anna transformed the ranching industry in Hawaii by introducing new breeds of cattle.
